Habit (USA, 1997) was written, produced, directed, and edited by genre fave Larry Fessenden, who also starred in the film as Sam,
an alcoholic bar manager whose estranged father just died. When we meet Sam, he’s sorting through some photos of his globetrotting
dad before heading to a Halloween party at a friend’s place where he meets the mysterious Anna (Meredith Snaider) and becomes
obsessed with her, much to his own detriment as their entanglements leave him in increasing ill health.

The Lair of the White Worm (England, 1988) is a vampire tale in only the most vague sense, directed by the always weird Ken Russell
from his adaptation of the Bram Stoker novel by the same name. The film is about an often naked half-human, half-snake immortal
named Lady Sylvia (played by Amanda Donahoe) who comes back to her springtime home in England to sacrifice some locals to her god,
the titular White Worm, Dionin. |

Vampire films have been a staple in movie theaters since the days of silent films and have strongly influenced our notions of
vampires in popular culture. By far, the most well-known and popular vampire in the movies is Count Dracula. An amazing number of
movies have been filmed over the years depicting the evil count, some of which are ranked among the greatest depictions of vampires
on film. |

Vampire films go back at least as far as the 1920 when Nosferatu, F.W.Murnau's brilliant but illegal remake of Bram Stoker's novel
first appeared on the silver screen. That and others, such as first talkie version with Bela Lugosi, quickly gained a reputation
as classics of the genre-or at least by the time anyone thought of such things. Yet when one looks around at vampire films and
television series today, a more direct influence suggests itself.

Vampires and vampire-like creatures have been found in the folklore of every civilization, every culture and every religion since
the beginning of recorded time. New Orleans is no exception. The city was settled in the early 1700's and it was during this
time in Europe that massive vampire hunts were occurring.

30 Days of Night (USA, 2007) is an adaptation of a successful, and really good, comic book by Steve Niles with art by Ben
Templesmith about the small Alaskan town of Barrow as it encounters its yearly month-long
“night.†This year it’s
different as a boatful of shark-like vampires lead by Marlow (played by the always wonderful Danny Huston) disembark to feast
without fear of burning to a crisp. |
